Fifth-generation David Nieuwoudt has taken the family’s former fruit farm in the remote Cederberg Mountain range to heights undreamed of by his grandfather, who planted grapes here in 1973. Learning from the unique conditions, a landlocked site with an altitude of around 1,000 metres above sea level, among the highest in the Western Cape, David purchased a maritime site at Elim near Cape Agulhas in 2008. It now allows him to expresses cool climate on two fronts in his range, Cederberg and Ghost Corner, to wide critical acclaim. Deputies Alex Nel and Tammy Turck-Nel since 2011 have brought their own deft touches to a portfolio that now regularly features in the guide’s gallery of five stars, this edition including a sparkling MCC, which speaks to the team’s versatility.
